Australia’s best over 30’s golfers will descend on the Shoalhaven for the NSW Mid-Amateur Golf Championships after Shoalhaven Heads Golf Course was announced as host course for the Championship in 2019. Over 170 players are expected to take part in the 54 hole tournament which will take place from the 28th to 30th April, 2019. The Mid-Amateur is a sought after crown, with the respective champions getting automatic entry into the Men’s and Women’s NSW Open Championships later in the year.
Graeme Phillipson, General Manager of Golf at Golf NSW said, “Shoalhaven Heads Golf Club is an ideal venue to host a championship of significant quality like the Mid-Amateur. “This is a truly national event, and it’s stature is growing by the year. “The links-style course will provide a real challenge to the players. The proximity to the ocean and sea breezes will be a true test of golf.
Mr Phillipson added many of the competitors saw the week as an ideal opportunity to explore the best of what the region had to offer, providing a boost for the local economy. “Many of the players will be here for four or five nights at least. They like to explore the surrounds, and enjoy good food & good wine.”
Shoalhaven City Council Mayor, Amanda Findley said, “We are delighted to have the NSW Mid-Amateur Golf Championships in the Shoalhaven and welcome the contingent of golfers to our area. “We wish all the competitors well and hope whilst they are not on the course battling it out, they are enjoying the mountains, surf, bushland and the hospitality of the quaint villages of the region.”
Mr Rob Russell, President of Shoalhaven Heads Golf Club said the players will be greeted with a course in great condition and worthy of a championship. “We are thrilled to able to host the NSW Mid-Amateur Championship. The course will be in fantastic condition and the competitors can expect a real test of golf here.”
Reigning champion, Mark Boulton from Phillip Island in Victoria, will defend his title. He will face strong opposition from a host of players from across NSW including former champions Logan Toms from Woolgoolga, Andrew Tharle from the ACT and Mudgee’s Mark Hale, who finished runner-up in this year’s tournament at Bathurst. Locals with a chance to take the title include the Shoalhaven Golf Club Champion Mark Johnston, who is also the course record holder, and the Links Shell Cove’s trio of 2016 NSW Country Champion Anthony Brunero, Danny Nesbitt & Colin Mitchell.

The Heads women’s golf club held their charity day in support of the Shoalhaven Parkinson’s nurses today. Once again, everyone enjoyed the day both on the course and during lunch in the club house. The game was Irish Four Ball and the team of Greg Montgomery, Col Parrish, Connie Parrish and Brian Rowe took out first prize. See the results section for more information.
There were many prizes won during the day. The women’s golf club thank the Heads Hotel and those members who sponsored many of the prizes.
Since the charity day was postponed in June due to the inclement weather, the number of players booked for the September game were low compared with previous years. In order to make the event successful and worthwhile, the Women’s Committee decided to open the competition to men this year. The Women’s golf club thank the men for participating and making it such a fun and successful day.
The following changes have been made to the golf program:
Men’s Foursomes Championship from Sun 7th Oct to 11th Nov
Single Stableford from Sat 15th Dec to 1st Dec
Stroke, Monthly Med. & Medal of Medals from Sat 1st Dec to 8th Dec

SHWGC Charity Day in support of Parkinson’s Nurses 4th September 8:30 shotgun start Irish Fourball $30 per person
Gentlemen, you are invited to play in the Women’s charity day on Tuesday 4th September 2018.
The women usually hold their Charity Day in June but due to the inclement weather this year we have had to postpone it to September. The women’s golf clubs put out their Charity Day flyers early so that the players can choose which club/charity they prefer to support. As a result, it is difficult to persuade visitors to play on a postponed day.
In order to make the event successful and worthwhile, the Committee has decided to open the competition to gentlemen members and friends. Teams will consist of four players and may be either single sex or mixed. As usual there will be various competitions within the game and lunch is included in the price. Should you feel inclined to play a game on Tuesday please contact Felicity on 0431 173 260 or the Pro Shop on 4448 8683 by the end of Saturday. If you don’t have a team, no problem, we will make up teams from individual players. Thanks for your support.
The men’s Foursomes Championship has been postponed and will now take place on Sunday 11th November 2018. The event is played over 27 holes in groups of six players with tee off times between 7:30am and 9:00am.
The Heads V Gold Creek Challenge 2018
The second round of The Heads versus Gold Creek Challenge will take place on Saturday 1st December 2018. This is our return trip to Gold Creek gold club and we take a strong 21 points lead into the second round. We will be playing in pairs from 10:20am tee off times.
As we are travelling in numerous cars, we will meet at Nerriga Pub at 7:30am for a full cooked brekky. The brekky is included in the price of the trip.
A social game is arranged for Sunday 2nd December from 9:30am onwards. We will travel home after the Sunday game.
Our accommodation is twin share at the Quality Hotel Dixon. The hotel caters for everyone’s needs with a massive club attached to the accommodation. The club has several bars, a restaurant/café and stays open until the early hours of the morning. There are also several restaurants within a walking distance of the club. Brekky on Sunday will be in the club’s café.
The cost of the trip is $240 per person which includes 2 games of golf, carts, prizes, accommodation, two breakfasts and fuel money for those driving. I think that this is fantastic value.
This offer is open to all male members of The Heads golf club and the first 24 people to pay their money will be guaranteed a spot. If we need to extend to 28 players, we can do so however we will see how things pan out.
I have set up a separate bank account for this trip and people can pay directly into it or they can pay by credit card or cash in the pro shop. Payment by Direct Debit is preferred.

Maggie Paton’s farewell dinner was held on 17 August 2018. Seventy friends of Maggie attend the dinner. The strong attendance, along with the accolades heaped on her during the speeches, shows how much Maggie is appreciated at the golf club and will be missed. Maggie has been a valuable member of the golf club for 15 years and is now moving to Perth. In her time at the golf club she has been a Board member, Ladies Committee member, bar roster organiser, bar volunteer and Bushcare volunteer. We will surely miss Maggie’s company and energetic work ethic.
