Darcy Boyd visited Shoalhaven Heads Golf Club recently. Darcy is the 2019 Australian Amateur Medallist at age 21. He is a member of Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club and formally a junior member of Toukley Golf Club.

Darcy joined the regular Wednesday “Muppets” golf group at Shoalhaven Heads Golf Club for a round with his mate Jack McDonald an aspiring cricketer. Playing off +2, Darcy scored 44 stableford points which equates to 10 under par. Max Lamond and Ian Bain were privileged to see such an exceptional round which comprised 2 eagles (8th and 17th) and 6 Birdies (4th, 9th, 10th, 12th 14th and 18th).

A couple of highlights include his 7 iron hole-in-one on the 8th, virtually a perfect shot, online and rolled up the green and dropped out of sight. Perhaps his most remarkable and brilliant shot was his 2nd to the par five 18th. His drive was hit by the Nor’easter which pushed the ball right towards the hazard finishing a couple of metres from the boundary and past the right fairway bunker.

He was faced with a shot of 170 metres to the green and 20 metres behind high tress on the dogleg. At 9 under par one would think any lesser player would have played away from the trees and settled for par but not Darcy, he played over the trees and onto the green leaving a 7 metre putt (his longest of the day). He then holed the putt for a final birdie.

Darcy only missed one green which was short on the par 3 second hole. His stats for the game are remarkable, Darcy hit 12 greens in regulation and 5 greens in one under regulation (9th, 12th, 14th, 17th and 18th). This was an exception round and a treat to see. With his attitude to the game and his pleasant demeanour, Darcy has the potential of a great future in the game and we wish him all the best.

The cancer charity golf day was held on Friday 25th October. This is the fifth year that the event has been held and it turned out to be another huge success. We raised $13,000 which exceeds last year by approximately $500. We are proud to hold the cancer charity golf day each year which is an annual event on our golfing calendar.

We thank the many sponsors and players who willingly contributed to this fund-raising event. We especially thank Hyundai, unfortunately no one was successful in scoring a hole-in-one and taking home the Hyundai Kona.

Maryanne Rinks from Shoalhaven Cancer Care Centre thanked everyone for organising another fund-raising day. The cancer centre has been opened six years, almost to the day, and performs 6,000 patient services per month. While the centre is providing great core services to the Shoalhaven community, it recently commenced performing new clinical trials.

The radiation therapy section has its first patient undertaking specialised treatment with sophisticated equipment which attacks legions in the brain. This technique reduces the treatment time from serval weeks to just a few days. Hitherto, patients had to go to Sydney for this treatment and the centre is now pleased to be able to offer specialised treatment in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven health district.

The money raised in the year before last went towards purchasing an oven, and that raised last year went toward an Ultrasound machine. The money raised this year may go towards specialised equipment which will be used for the radio therapy treatment mentioned above. When you realise how expensive specialised medical equipment is, you understand how important the funds raised on days like this are to the cancer care centre.

The two person Ambrose golf competition results are:
• Mixed and Overall winning team, Karl and Olivia Fretwell (61.5 net strokes);
• Mens team winner, Phil Behan and Evan Norris (62 net strokes);
• Ladies team winner, Marilyn Schott and Robbie Chapman (68.75 net strokes).
